Towards Developing an mHealth Platform for Stroke Screening Utilizing Audio-Video Recordings

Abstract
Stroke is a leading cause of death and long-term disability worldwide, where rapid and accurate stroke identification is crucial for effective clinical management. Failure to detect stroke symptoms in the prehospital or community setting is a critical barrier to timely treatment and remains a leading cause of preventable disability. In this paper, we present a structured comparative survey of 35 original research papers on digital health tools for stroke screening and detection. We compared and classified these works across clinical purpose, input modality, and decision mechanism, and identified a significant gap: only two existing systems combine audiovisual input with fully automated AI decision-making for stroke screening. Motivated by this finding, we propose a novel mobile application framework that uses a smartphone front camera and microphone to capture short audiovisual clips of the face to produce a real-time risk flag without requiring clinician involvement. The proposed system can be applied in prehospital triage, community screening, and remote health monitoring without a healthcare assistant.
